Environs No. 9

Environs is a series bringing together music across genres that embraces texture, improvisation, and the environment. Thank you to @dadabarnyc for having us!

On this edition we feature the musician and scientist Willow, blending biosonification and songcraft in conversation with a plant; “Glassbirds,” an innovative work blending vocal techniques and electronics, by Freja Højland Høj (@frejahoejland), a classical vocalist and experimental performer with numerous acclaimed performances in opera and new music; the meditative keyboard excursions of host Leftpop, and the eclectic sonic journeys of paper gem (@paper_gem).

Willow is an environmental scientist, interdisciplinary artist, and musician from Brooklyn, NY. Willow weaves intimate art-pop, field recordings, and musical improvisation made in collaboration with plants and fungi through a process called biosonification to immerse the listener in a provocative sonic ecosystem and inspire connection between ourselves and the living, breathing Earth.
